Metashake is the Most Complete, Advanced Formula on the Market!
Bear in mind, you have to be careful when you read labels, because many, if not most, nutritional ingredients are expensive. Therefore, companies use a technique called ‘fairy dust’ labeling. This is a sneaky trick where a product is loaded with a huge variety of nutritional ingredients - and subsequently a list a mile long of all sorts of neat-sounding, healthy stuff on board. But there’s a catch: the quantity of each of these dozens of ingredients tends to be so small that it costs almost nothing to put them in (and the body gets almost nothing out of ‘em), while the label looks like something designed by the gods of Mount Olympus.
Well, fear not, ‘cause that’s not what’s happening here at Metabolic Research Center. In fact, Dr. Spreen told us this is the most comprehensive list of ingredients he's ever seen that uses reasonable amounts, and he's been recommending/formulating nutritional supplements for thirty years.
It may look like our shake has one of those ‘fairy-dust-looking’ labels, but the difference is we actually put a reasonable amount of each ingredient in there! So, when you see a nutrient in this shake that you’ve read about, you can be sure that there’s enough in there to really use (and worth having on board).
Of course, all the vitamins are in there, in amounts comparable to a normal vitamin supplement (we don’t go overboard here, so we can leave room for the really good stuff!)
And we did the same for the minerals...however, we also threw in the trace minerals, which most supplements fail to do (the trace minerals are just that: necessary to human nutrition, but only in very tiny amounts).
We did not, however, load our shakes up with sugar - the only sugar comes from the powder of whole sugar cane. The sweet taste is enhanced by the use of the extract of the stevia leaf, a zero-calorie, naturally sweet plant, along with another sweet-tasting addition you’ll read about in just a moment.
Our preference is to load up more on protein than sugar, and whey protein at that (a high quality protein).
There are no trans fats or saturated fats on board.
We do use a fair amount of oat bran - it has lots of fiber and more protein than quick oats. But what’s really cool is that it expands when exposed to liquids, causing a bulking action far greater than the original volume of bran, so you feel full way earlier than expected.
Maca is a root plant from the Andes that has been used for centuries in dried powder form as both a food source and medicinal herb. Studies have shown that one of the main Maca root powder benefits is its ability to work with the body’s endocrine system to help balance hormone levels, which of course can have a myriad of beneficial effects, including mood, libido, and appetite control. The reports are impressive enough that we made it an important part of our mix.
Flax oil is a wonderful gluten-free source of necessary fatty acids; but whole flax seed meal is far better (so that’s what we used). The ground seeds contain all sorts of healthy components (known by general observation since 3000 BC), but the three biggies are omega-3 fatty acids (the ‘heart-healthy’ fats), lignans (high antioxidant properties) and fiber (both soluble and insoluble). It also tends to be a natural cholesterol controller, so all-in-all it’s a great part of our mainstay Metashake base.
Apple pectin, a soluble fiber, is a general intestinal regulator that does double duty as a supporter of healthy cholesterol levels. It also acts as an antioxidant within the blood stream.
Most everyone knows that Aloe Vera, topically, is good for burns. Its use internally, however, for a myriad of health claims has also been around for just as long. Though funded studies are lacking, this remarkable plant extract has been linked to lowering both blood glucose, and cholesterol levels, not to mention a long history of aiding with digestion in general. Phytonutrients within the extract are also thought to fight the germs that cause strep throat, shigellosis, athlete's foot, jock itch and nail fungus.
Yacon root powder is very low on the glycemic index chart (a good thing for controlling blood sugar), and has a reputation for being one of the healthiest sweeteners known. This is because the root is loaded with inulin (not to be confused with insulin), a unique sugar-like compound that our body has difficulty using, while readily used by probiotics, which are those ‘good guy’ bacteria we so desperately need colonizing our gastrointestinal tract (and which are so easily destroyed). Though we like yacon to help keep our shakes sweet, the stimulation of probiotic growth is a huge added bonus.
It’d be silly to promote the growth of those ‘good guy’ bacteria without actually supplying any, so of course we’ve thrown in a healthy dose of those organisms known as ‘probiotics’. As there seems to be some question as to which type is best, we use a mix of four different well-known types, in a dairy-free blend.
It never hurts to give the body a little assist in its job of digesting the foods we eat. So, we’ve thrown in an assortment of enzymes with the task of breaking down starches, proteins, fats, milk sugar and cellulose fibers.
To all the above, we’ve added concentrates of plant food extracts that are known to have beneficial effects, but that you may not be putting in your diet on a regular basis. These include the highly-digestible, nutrient-dense foods such as wheat grass, barley grass, chlorella and spirulina, along with acerola berry, citrus bioflavonoids, rose hips, maitake mushroom, reishi mushroom, spinach, pomegranate, bilberry, broccoli, cauliflower, collards, artichoke, basil, and even a touch of cinnamon (which can be good for your blood sugar).
Then there are the specialty items, herbal concentrates that contain particular attributes unique to themselves. These include camu camu (with a reputation for energy boosting, mood-lifting and immune system strengthening), goji berries (antioxidant actions thought to help with immune function, anti-aging, and vision), cordyceps (long used for athletic endurance), green tea (antioxidant), milk thistle (liver protection), grape seed extract (antioxidant), resveratrol (long list, including anti-aging), echinacea (allergy protection), ginkgo (memory), and even a few others.
